SUMMARY:Therapeutic Justice in the UK
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, Dr. Emma Jones (Sheffield University) and Dr. Anna Kawalek (Leeds Beckett University) engaged in several lengthy discussions about the potential of launching a Therapeutic Jurisprudence (TJ) in the UK Chapter. This had yet been done before in the UK context\, but would form a branch of the International Society of TJ (ISTJ)\, and would mimic international Chapters with similar goals and interests. \nIn 2019\, Jones and Kawalek went on to organise and host the first UK meeting themed around TJ in the UK at the Open University\, marking the official launch of the UK Chapter. The purpose of the meeting was to showcase some key work in the area whilst bringing together individuals with shared interests\, augmenting networks within the UK body and across the international society (ISTJ).\n \nFollowing the success of the first TJ in the UK meeting\, Dr. Emma Jones\, Dr. Anna Kawalek\, and Penelope Welbourne (Plymouth University)\, are hosting the first *official* conference for TJ in the UK. This will take place at Plymouth University on 16th April 2020. We are delighted to announce that tickets are now on sale and a list of speakers have now been confirmed. \nDelivering the Keynote Speech is Professor David Wexler\, who co-founded the concept “TJ” in the 1980s\, and who is Director of the International Society for Therapeutic Jurisprudence; we welcome him all the way from Puerto Rico! \nPROGRAMME OF EVENTS: \n·  10:30-10:45 – Penelope Welbourne and Dr Anna Kawalek\n·  10:45-12:15 – Professor David Wexler\n·  12:15-12:45 – Dr John Stannard\n·  12:45-13:30 – Lunch provided in the foyer\n·  13:30-14:00 – Professor Nicola Glover-Thomas\n·  14:00-14:30 – Amber Turner\n·  14:30-15:00 – Joanna Shapland\n·  15:00-16:00 – Round table discussion

SUMMARY:Dispute-Settlers – Challenges and Dilemmas
DESCRIPTION:The Non-Adversarial and Therapeutic Justice Center (NATJC) is continuously heading various activities related to TJ. In December 2019 the NATJC held the conference “Dispute-Settlers – Challenges and Dilemmas” which dealt with the changes in the role of lawyers\, mediators and judges in dispute resolution procedures. \nThe conference included a panel discussion on ethical aspects and dilemmas of Judges as Dispute-Settlers\, including a Judge from the Israeli Community Court who participated in said panel. In addition\, the NATJC hosted additional judges from the Israeli Community Court for a discussion which included examples of the integration of TJ practice in Israel’s Community Court. Moreover\, the NATJC held a few lectures which focused on various TJ topics and set the goal of exposing students and different practitioners to the principles of TJ and encouraging the study of TJ and the implementation of it. The above activities took place in continuation to the “Therapeutic Law Week” which was held by the NATJC last year and included numerous events and the host of TJ Movement Founder\, Professor David Wexler\, and Professor Susan L. Brooks of Drexel University.

SUMMARY:2019 Justice for Young People Conference
DESCRIPTION:What are the latest and most pressing problems in the highly complex area of youth justice? And how can the various courts and tribunals of Australia’s juvenile justice system work together to provide a more effective and responsive youth justice system for all young people\, including Indigenous\, African and Pacific Islander youth? \nJudicial officers\, lawyers\, police\, medical experts\, psychologists and social scientists from around Australia will be convening to discuss these issues at the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration’s conference on youth justice\, to be held on November 8-9 at Melbourne’s Rendezvous Hotel. \nJoin them in panel sessions that will focus on identifying the most urgent issues at hand in youth justice and on finding practical solutions for them. Conference sessions will also cover the complex medical and psychological issues that are relevant in a jurisdiction that\, at its best\, can help divert the flow of damaged\, marginalised and brutalised children away from youth detention and the adult prison system and back into family life. \nA must for any professional working in this area\, the conference will begin with keynotes  from the NT’s Judge Sue Oliver and them  from  Judge Amanda  Chambers\, President of the Children’s  Court  of Victoria\, together with Judge Peter Johnstone\, President of the Children’s Court of NSW.
